Sixteen-year-old Keegan is struggling to keep her huge secret from her friends--she's an elf, descended from a long line of elves that live in secrecy alongside humans.
In elfin society, mates are predetermined but not allowed to meet until they are eighteen. Against tradition, Keegan's brother Thaddeus told her Rourk's name because his visions warned him she'd need Rourk's protection, especially since Keegan will play a key role in the coming war between the dark and light elves.
Rourk finds himself drawn to Keegan's side every time she thinks his name. He wants to talk to her but remains in the shadows, silently guarding her every time she mentally beckons him. A twist of fate thrusts the two of them together when Rourk is forced to step up his protection and make his presence known.
An ancient prophecy deeply entwines Keegan's family and the future of their society. Somehow they must find a way to thwart fate and win the battle...without losing Keegan. With war brewing, and dark forces aligning, will Keegan and Rourk ever have the life together that they both desire?
What I thought:
Elves definitely isn't my usual choice of things to read about by I found myself quite enjoying this book. I really liked how we got to see how Keegan interacted in both the real world doing every day things like going to school, shopping and having coffee with friends and also how she lived when she was at home where she could be her magical self. I liked that all the elves had different magical talents.
I'm still not totally sure how I feel about their twist on soul mates yet though. Part of me thinks that they are really lucky to have such a connection to the one they are supposed to be with but another part of me thinks that it is unfair to them. Growing up knowing that as soon as you fall 18 that you are going to meet the perfect person for you and will be unable to resist being with them would affect your normal teenage relationships. Even though they are allowed to date in their teens I kind of see it as though they are going to be missing out on learning fully from the experience of young love, knowing that even if things are going really well that you are going to break their heart would be really hard.
Keegan and her family feature quite heavily in a prophecy about a war between Light and Dark Elves. Shortly before Keegan turns 17, it becomes necessary to bring Keegan and Rourk together early. Rourk became a body guard for Keegan but was supposed to remain hidden from her but when a kidnapping attempt on Keegan's life happens Rourk has no choice but to show himself to help her. She only sees him for a moment and she realises who he is. Although it is against the rules Keegan and Rourk are brought together before the war takes place and they spend a great weekend together before they have to part because of the war preparations.
The book would be pretty boring if Keegan gets her happily ever after and then it ends but that isn't what happens but I can't really say anything else without spoiling the whole book.
I like where the book ends as you know that the next book is going to be quite different from this one.
I like books with strong lead characters and for quite a bit of this book Keegan comes across and quite spoilt which frustrates me quite a bit.
