Breathless by Sophie Jordan
(A Firelight Novella)
Sophie Jordan's breathtaking digital original novella set in the world of Firelight.
Az, it's supposed to be a fun summer vacation with her family. Nothing
complicated. Just a quick trip to test the waters as she prepares for a
year on her own. That all changes when she rescues a drowning girl and
meets Tate—the most gorgeous human boy she's ever seen. Tate throws her
heart, her plans, and her life into upheaval, but the closer she gets to
him, the harder it is to hide the secret of what she is. With no hope
for a future together, the last thing that can ever happen . . . is
This stand-alone digital original is perfect for those new to the Firelight series as well as veteran fans
If your an avid reader of the Firelight Series then I know you are equally as excited about the first novella to appear for the series!! This release was so under the radar that I found out about its release randomly a few days after it came out on goodreads. Again, thank you GoodReads for being a girl's best friend! Only downside for those non-ereader's, Breathless is only available as an ebook.
Novella's are one of my favorite forms of stories because it gives you a chance to view different characters in different lights or situations you wouldn't normally see in the standard series.
So, I'm not sure if my level of excitement for this novella was too high that it set the standards for this story unrealistically high or what, but overall I was not too impressed by this story. Breathless follows a side character, Az, from the Firelight Series. Az is Jacinda's best friend in the series.
Az's story takes her and her parents on a vacation to a lake house to prepare Az for her tour away from the pride coming up next year. Her parents basically want Az to become comfortable, but Az never expected to fall in love with a human!
In general, this storyline would not bother me at all because I love the whole forbidden love thing, but Az's story sounds so similar to Jacinda's just on a smaller scale. Az even makes reference to Jacinda and how she would never let her hear the end of this if Jacinda had been the one fall in love with a human. From what I remember, in Firelight, Az does make a big deal about Jacinda falling in love with a human (Will).
This novella left me with many unanswered questions. When did this happen in relation to the firelight story. From the context of dialog Az has, to me it seems this happens before Firelight, but i am unsure. The ending was a little abrupt, but hey it is a novella after all. As much as I was disappointed with this novella i am extremely curious to see if this will become a spin off story. The epilog to Breathless is very open and leaves a lot of chances to see Az's character grow.
